Jason Koopman

EC has been keeping an eye on him for a while and when he ran a 10km pb of 33:25 at the Cape Town Marathon 10km in 2014 we knew there were bigger things to come for this young man from Paarl who attends at Charles Hill Secondary School. Middle distance athlete, Jason Koopman, will be aiming to qualify for the Youth and Junior South African Championship in 2015.

“My most memorable moment was when I ran a 6km race in Pretoria on the 13th of December at schools SA’s. I went into the race to at least get in the top 20 and I thought that I’ll also be 4th of our team but then that day I wasn’t in the mood for losing and I prepared myself mentally to give everything. That day the Lord truly gave me strength to reach my most inner fight. Now I just have to work on that.”

That day he finished 12th at SA Schools XC u/17 race, who by some is seen as the toughest boys age in the country now, and finished 2nd of his Western Cape team.

His main focus is the 1500m and 3000m, but he will be making his debut in the 5000m this year. Koopman has got a personal best of 8:59 in the 3000m and 4:10 in the 1500m (for now). He says he is looking to go sub 4 in the 1500m in 2015.

He earned his Western Cape colous in XC running in 2013 and 2014. His best performance thus far at provincial level is a 3rd place in the 3000m and a 2nd place in the 1500m at Boland Championships.

“Athletics is a big part of my life, but not my only focus,” says Koopman. “My studies are just as important, because education is the key to supporting your family someday. But athletics builds a base on which you can achieve greatness and that is what I am aiming for.”

We wish Jason all the best for the 2015 season and we believe he will achieve that greatness within him and that soon he’ll be nipping at the heels of and running side by side with athletes like Bruce-Lynn DamonsAnthony Timmy Timoteus, Ikageng Gorekwa and EC Academy’s Warno Potgieter as he enters his first Junior year!
