The fourth day of competition (Sunday, 25 October), at the 2015 IPC Para-athletics World Championships in Qatar, produced two silver results for South Africa. This puts the team at five medals half-way through the competition.
First up, on another hot day in Doha, Paralympian Hilton Langenhoven got through to this evening’s T12 400m final clocking a season’s best of 50.83 seconds.
On the field, fellow Western Province athlete, Reinhardt Hamman heaved a 6.30m season’s best on his last attempt for silver in the Shot Put F38 item. Gold went to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Doroshenko (14.71m) and bronze to Dusan Grezl (CZE) measuring 12.02 meters.
“What an emotional day! Thank you to everyone who has supported me. Thanks to SASCOC and the OPEX program, my sponsors and my coach, Karin Le Roux, for all the hard work you put into making me a better shot-putter,” Hamman commented on Facebook.
During the evening session, South Africa’s second silver of the day came from T38 athlete Dyan Buis, who leapt to a season’s best 6.30m in long jump. Gold, and a new World Record, went to China’s Jianwen Hu (7.13m) and bronze to Andrei Poroshin (6.12m) – a new European Record for the Russian.
“I am so thankful for my silver medal in Long Jump, I haven’t jumped that far in years,” says Buis, who last competed in the long jump T38 item at the 2012 London Paralympics.
Gauteng’s Gerrit Kruger (F37), who represented South Africa at the Lyon 2013 Championships, finished in the top ten with a ninth place in shot put with his best throw of the evening measuring 12.71 meters.
Finally, Louzanne Coetzee and Rouxne Vermaak (Guide) ran a 5 minute 29.26 seconds race in the Women’s 1500m T11 qualifying rounds – a new personal best for the Free State duo but, not enough to get them into the final.
The Day Five (Monday, 26 October) evening session has two South Africans featuring in 400m track action – Hilton Langenhoven and, London 2012 silver medallist, Anruné Liebenberg (T47).
