In a very intense encounter with the lead constantly changing in the men’s Long Jump Manyonga put down a new pb jump of 8.37m to take the lead. With Rutherford, Henderson and Lawson with their final jumps still to come. Henderson then delivered a 8.38m jump to snatch the gold from Manyonga. But Manyonga remained in 2nd to claim SA’s first medal in the athletics. Samaai failed to cross the 8m mark in the final but finished in 9th place.

Stephen Mokoka competed in the 10 000m final where he finished in 18th place with a time of 27:54.57. Rynardt van Rensburg lined in the 800m semi finals and left everything on the track running a new personal best time of 1:45.33! Van Rensburg now clocked 1:45 twice in two days which alone is an incredible feat for the African bronze medalist.
