Ladies and gentleman, athletic friends and family it is that time again. The time has arrived for the 4 th addition of the Tomtom Tembisa street mile that is taking place on a yearly basis in the streets of Tembisa. The question remains, will Lebogang Phalula break her own Tembisa street mile record of 4:44 set two years ago or will Simonay Weitsz successfully defend her title? This is for sure the reason why Mr. Donald Mathipa has put together a stellar field including the course record holder, defending champion, USSA XC champ, SA XC champs and Randburg Streetmile champs.

The Tomtom Tembisa Street Mile has shown great growth over the past years from an organising perspective thanks to all the sponsors involved. This all gives the athletes good exposure to an exciting and dramatic street mile race as our elite athletes takes the race to another level of greatness each year. The performances that the athletes produce on the day are just priceless.

From the ladies perspective it always seems that whoever is the strongest and most mentally prepared on race day will take the victory. This year we have in the ladies race the Tembisa Street Mile record holder Lebogang ‘Pumalula’ Phalula alongside with defending champion and still a junior, young Simone Weitsz. Both has shown great improvement the last past months, Pumalula running strong on the road, Weitsz that is clocking fantastic times over the 800m distances at the pre-season schools competition running 2:08 just 2 weeks ago. So we are expecting some fireworks from these two as both of them are in good shape.

Our field is so promising that we are actually not allowed to write off any other talented athletes in the fantastic line up. Glenrose Xaba the cross country great that cannot go unnoticed with all her endurance along with the Kovsies up and coming star, our 2016 South African 10km Cross Country Champion as well as the South African University Cross Country Championship Kesa Molotsane that has also shown great improvement over the past year and can also become a threat to defending champion Simone Weitsz and Record holder Lebogang Phalula.

It was said on Facebook comments that Nicole Louw should be the one to watched out for, as her profile covers up for the comments. Louw has fantastic times in the middle distance events and clocked 800m in 2minutes 13secondes, 1500m in 4minutes 27secondes respectively. But will that be enough as more than half of this elite group of girls can clock an 800m under 2minutes and 15secondes. That includes Anuscha Nice 2:03 clocked in Kwangju (Korea) last year, Lizerrie Ferreira, the USSA XC 4km champ, Keletso Senosi 2:08, Thulisile Amon 2:13, Thandi Sehohle 2:14 and the young athlete Thobile Vilakazi who has been closing in on Weitsz over the year.

But also in the field we have the fearless ‘Tukkies’ athlete Stella Marias that is also not scared to take on any pace. Stella clocking times over the 800m and 1500m of 2:11 and 4:24 and having a fantastic cross country season behind her back that is enough to put her also on the list as a contender for victory. Stella lost a shoe early in the Randburg streetmile and will come to prove a point. So with an athlete like Stella in the race we can look forward to a fantastic race as the Phalula sisters are never afraid of any challenge with Lebo Phalula the other half of Lebogang also in the race. The two can never be separated when they together in one race, 1 and 2 perhaps?

Also worth mentioning that in this race will be the very young Prudence Sekgodisa who shocked everyone with her start to finish leading performance at the Randburg Streetmile to beat Simonay Weitsz in the Junior ladies mile.
